Brain Facts

The brain is an amazing machine, but we know very little about it.

For instance, have you ever been told that you only use 10% of your brain? You actually use up to 15% just while resting. When doing other brain-rigorous activities like crosswords and math, you brain fires up like crazy.

Other brain facts:

  • The wrinkles on your brain are critical to your brain’s performance! Smooth brains are evidence of drug usage or mental conditions.
  • Phineas Gage, a railroad worker in the northeast US in the 1800’s, had suffered a major accident involving a metal rod actually going through his frontal lobe and out the back of his head! He survived, living for 12 more years despite frequent sickness, but his close ones said that after the accident, he wasn’t quite himself. This is because the frontal lobe is the part that controls your personality, and he had damaged it in the accident.
  • Your brain neurons can’t feel pain! That’s why people undergoing neurosurgery are given no anesthesia, and sometimes they even interact with the surgeons or play music!
  • About a quarter of your brain is devoted completely to vision! That’s why you can remember things way easier if you see it rather than hear it. As a result, vision can actually influence your other senses, so you can hear one thing with your eyes open, and another with your eyes closed.

Hope you learned something new today! See you tomorrow!
