Nature is more powerful than we can ever imagine, and its creations can be awe-inducing and very destructive. Here’s some amazing things only occurring in nature that have amazed and puzzled many generations of humans.
- The Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, is a really cool effect caused by solar radiation passing through the Earth’s magnetic field. The magnetic reactions cause a bright green band of light across the Northern sky.
- The Catatumbo River in Venezuela is famous for the Catatumbo Lightning Phenomenon, where continuous lightning storms rage over the mouth of the river. It occurs for about 150 nights a year, and the lightning repeatedly strikes the same position for up to 280 times per hour! As a result, this relatively small area is considered to be the world’s largest single generator of tropospheric ozone.
- Some types of microorganisms proliferate rapidly at certain times, and when this happens, millions upon millions of them carpet the mouths of rivers and beaches, turning the water red in what we call “red tides”.
- In Montana, USA, there’s a lake that’s so perfectly transparent, it looks like it’s very shallow. However, it’s hundreds of feet deep! No one knows why this water is so clear and transparent.
Tell me about any other natural phenomena you’ve heard of. I love to hear about these things we can’t explain, and I hope you do too!
